Description

What’s Sportyaking? It’s a sportyak for 2 people and the ultimate white water sport. It combines the thrills of rafting and the skills of kayaking. It’s perfect for guests who have canoeing and rafting experience and want to take on a new challenge.

We begin our day with a safety briefing. Then, under the supervision of our experienced kayaker guides, you will learn proper paddle techniques for entering and exiting against currents, recovering your own boat in a surf and facing the rapids of the Rouge River at full speed!

You’ll do one thrilling decent of the Rouge River, taking time between rapids to enjoy the scenery and have fun on the calmer sections of the river.

We also offer a full day which includes 2 descents of the river, a riverside lunch and dinner at our basecamp.

Location

1 hour 15 minutes from Tremblant resort and 1 hour 15 minutes from Montreal or Ottawa (our rafting centre is between Ottawa and Montreal near the Ontario border). Transport from Tremblant resort available.

2 hours of sportyaking. The total duration, including driving (or transportation) time, and briefing is around 5 hours.

If guests are NOT staying in the Mont-Tremblant area, for example from Montreal or Ottawa, guests should choose the option NO Transport, because our rafting base is centered between Montreal, Ottawa and Mont-Tremblant.

Participants will meet at our base camp and can leave a bag there. Our Sportyaking – Express 1/2 Day requires some physical exertion. Guests who participate in the afternoon tour can choose to stay for dinner at Basecamp for an extra fee.

Conditions

All participants must know how to swim and have prior canoeing experience. Minimum 12 years old. No expecting mothers.

TO BRING: Shoes that fit on your feet, swimsuit, or clothes that dry quickly (no cotton) and towels. *However, wetsuits are included and boots can be rented on site for $5.
Youths aged 16 yrs – must be accompanied by an adult. A parent must sign the release form for 17 year olds.

Minimum 4 participants for rafting with transport. Single participants can still reserve; if we don’t have other reservations, we will contact you 48h in advance to reschedule.

FAQ

When should I reserve?

A day in advance is sufficient. We have many rafts available but we need to know in advance how many people will use the transport we provide.

Is it safe?

There is an element of risk in all sports and here is how they are minimized: In rafting, security protocols are very strict. You will receive proper equipment, instructions and a guide accompanies you throughout the entire activity. In addition, there are kayakers following you, ready to help you if needed.

Can anyone do this activity?

The main requirement is to know how to swim. Then, depending on the experience you are looking for and the age of the participants, you can chose from our Family, Express or Full-day rafting.

Do I need a wetsuit?

Early in the season it is necessary although once the summer has begun, the water is warm enough to wear only bathing suits with a windbreaker and/or fleece. It is included during the whole season (except the boots (5$), available to rent onsite). You will need a photo ID to do so. Consult our What to wear information page.

When is the lunch served, and what is for lunch?

The Lunch (included in the family rafting and full days) is served after the first descent on the river (only 1 descent with the family rafting). It’s a good idea to have a snack before leaving for the trip. It is a simple lunch with a variety of sandwiches served with vegetables and juice. Dinner (included in the full days) is served after the 2nd decent on the river. On the menu, steak or salmon, served with salad, vegetables and rice or potatoes. For those with allergies or for vegetarians, please specify upon reservation and we will be able to accommodate your requests.

Where do I leave my things?

If you have taken the option with transport, you will be leaving your belongings on the locked bus.
If you have taken the option without transport, you may leave your bags in your car. You may leave your keys with the receptionist.

If I drive myself is there free parking and will they bring me back to my car?

Yes there is free parking at base camp. The rafting trip starts from base camp and heads upstream via bus. We return to base camp via the river.

Will I get wet or fall in?

Probably. Before getting on the water, those who want a rougher ride will be put in a different raft from those who want an easier ride. Even if you do not end up in the river, waves often wash over the entire raft. It’s all part of the fun.

Comments: Experience was really bad, our instructor did not give us any warnings about how dangerous it could be to jump into the water from a rock, My daughter she's 13 and she jumped off the rocks into the river and she hit her leg on a rock that was under water and she broke her leg, she also has to have a big surgery because of what happened. The instructors did t even try to warn us and they said they would call and check on us but they never did. Overalls experience was really bad and not recommended.

We have looked into this and been in touch with you directly. Your daughter jumped into a section of river where we normally take a swim break. In doing so she hit a submerged rock. Our guides are all trained in first aid, but the guides who assessed you daughter believed that it was a bruise because, among other things, she walked up the long hill after her rafting. It is unfortunate that it was not properly diagnosed until later. We sincerely hope she is on the mend.

Comments: Overall it was amazing , people wise such a great experience , just the ride from Mont Tremblant to rafting and back was very unexpected for the value of the activity. Very old school bus, Brocken windows that we couldn’t close, it was early morning ,still fresh and same on our way back.

Self-driving has become more and more popular over the years as guests prefer their own vehicles, airconditioning, music, etc... We provide good driving directions as well as google map links to make driving yourself really easy.

Comments: The duration of the ride from the Tremblant village to the rafting side (1.5 hours) each way was too long. It defeats the purpose of book a vacation at Mont Tremblant. The change in the site location was announced to me after the activity had been booked. The exended travel time results in less time spent in Tremblant

Hi, and thanks for your feedback.

The drive to our rafting centre, if you follow our driving directions, is 1h15 from Mont-Tremblant. It is equally 1h15 from Montreal and from Ottawa. We provide driving directions from virtually anywhere you may be staying. This is the only activity that we offer OUTSIDE of our region...but we do so because it is well worth the trip to experience one of the top 10 rafting rivers on the continent.

We have one section of the river that is only 45 minutes away, that we use for our family rafting trip, but because of Covid, we recently lost our river access for this season. We expect to have it back after the pandemic. This happened after you had reserved and we tried to let everyone affected know before they arrived.

Comments: We enjoyed the rafting - but it would have been helpful to know it was 75 minutes away and the whole activity plus transport would be 7 hours (met the shuttle at 11, arrived back at 6). We loved everything, but we had to rush to alter our dinner plans after we returned. Pictures were a little expensive but not too bad.

Our Family Rafting is not normally 75 minutes away. Because of a very late srping, we had higher than normal water levels for a few days during your visit in June. When levels are above 100 cubic meters, which was the case, we move to a different section of the river that is further away. Its our fault, as our guides did not let our reservation staff know of the change. We're very sorry for the inconvenience it caused you.

Comments: We enjoyed our rafting trip on the Rouge River. The only thing I think the operator could have done better was arrange groups so there was more balance on each boat. We were a couple, and we had a family of 5 with 3 teenagers that were all small, from 90 to 120 lbs. We didn’t have a lot of rowing power with 3 teenagers, two women, two men, and our female guide. We picked up a trainee after the first run, a male, but he was a little frenetic, jumping into the boat, knocking people around a bit as he jumped around inside the boat. We still had a lot of fun but it might have been a better experience for all if there was a bit more balance to the boat with some stronger people on board.

Comments: White water was the highlight of the trip for sure! The coordinator Karen was awesome - friendly, informative and accommodating. The crew on the water was awesome - lots of fun, and kept us safe. The photos that were taken during the day that were available for purchase actually made the trip unbeatable! Incredible photography! This is the main reason I would raft with these people again, as opposed to other locations. Great great team!

Thanks for your comments. That is a very good description of rafting security. Minor injuries do happen sometimes. There are risks involved in all outdoor activities, particularily when water, speed, or height is involved. I would add that risks are minimized, in rafting for example, by having large life jackets, helmets, fully trained and certified guides, safety kayakers around rafts...minimized but not eliminated.

Comments: This was the family excursion. Guide seemed determined to make it more thrilling than it naturally was, resulting in husband nearly drowning by being thrown from raft then getting stuck under it and young kids having to have heads held above water .... but otherwise a good trip!

Thanks for your feedback. Ummm...being thrown out of a raft and even ending up under it for a few seconds is part of rafting. It IS an adventure. But it doesn't mean you're going to drown...which has actually never happened in the17 years we've been operating. Big life jackets and awesome guides are there to make sure that doesn't happen. Comments: We spent a lot of time waiting for one of the guides to go forward to take pictures. We would be sitting there quite a while. The lunch was long and again we got the feeling we were wasting time. We were only in the water for 2 to 2.5 hours total. They were very big on marketing their photo DVD for 45$ I bought it for the kids. Overall we loved it.

Comments: The girl who met us and drove the bus was awesome, efficient, friendly and we felt we had an added bonus of a bus tour because she had so much to tell us on the way there and back. The guide on the boat (Alex) was just perfect, he said other guides are more entertaining but we liked that he was informative and obviously knew was he was doing but he wasn't always telling stories and signing like the other rafts we saw, it made for both an exciting ride and a very relaxing one too.

Comments: Kyle our guide was great. The ride however was not. We did the family ride as we had a child that did not meet the weight requirement for the higher level of rapids. We had done this a few years ago and it was great with lots of rapids. This year it was like a leisurly boat ride down a river. Not exciting at all for the money that was spend. They should have found another area in the river to go down that was a bit more exciting.
