Do I need a license to drive a snowmobile?

Yes, an automobile driver’s license is required

In Quebec, to drive a snowmobile on the trails, a valid automobile driver’s license is required. This means that anyone driving a snowmobile must have a valid automobile license (Quebec class 5), or an equivalent international license. If you don’t have this license, you can’t legally drive a snowmobile on the trails.

Exceptions for young people

Young people aged 16 and 17 can drive a snowmobile, but they must have a valid driver’s license (class 5 probationary or learner’s permit). They must also be accompanied by an adult with a valid license. Without these conditions, they cannot drive a snowmobile on the trails.

For our guided tours, drivers must be 18 or 21 years minimum (*depending on the current insurers requirements) and have a valid driver’s license in hand throughout the snowmobile tour (copy or photo not accepted). Passengers must be at least 5 years old (min 137cm/4’6”).

Compliance with laws and regulations

In Quebec, snowmobile trails are regulated by provincial laws. Requiring a driver’s license allows authorities to ensure that riders are qualified and respect the rules in force, such as speed, respect for other users and signage.

Reducing risks

Driving a snowmobile requires special skills due to winter conditions, tight turns and varied terrain, similar to a car. Having an automobile  license means that the driver has acquired some of the basic skills to operate a vehicle  in these conditions, reducing the risk of accidents and injuries.
